What is a lawn striper?
A simple attachment that changes how your lawn reflects light.
A lawn striper mounts behind a mower and bends the grass in the direction of travel. Grass bent away from you reflects more sunlight and looks lighter; grass bent toward you creates more shadow and looks darker. Alternating mowing directions creates the ballpark-style pattern.
CheckMate™ uses a free-floating row of solid-rubber rollers to apply consistent pressure while following normal lawn contours. The system can remain attached during regular mowing and requires no filling with water or sand.

Mower tires create visible tracks because they push the grass in one direction and compress it against the ground. CheckMate™ stripers were designed to reproduce that same action across the width of the roller. The solid-rubber rollers direct and compress the grass much like the mower’s tires, producing darker, more defined stripes that remain visible longer.

The recommended roller is generally 8–10 inches narrower than the deck so the roller and wide rear tires form one clean stripe. A 52-inch deck typically receives a 42-inch striper, while a 54-inch deck typically receives a 45-inch striper.

Why narrower is often better
A deck-width roller can produce a worse stripe.
On zero turns, the rear tires are wide enough to become part of the stripe. A correctly sized roller connects those tire tracks. Going wider can overlap the next pass, introduce an unwanted third shade, catch landscaping, and make the mower less maneuverable.

What results should you expect?
Grass type, mowing height, sunlight, and pattern all matter.
Cool-season grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, and ryegrass tend to grow upright and produce the strongest striping response. Warm-season grasses—including Bermuda, zoysia, centipede, and St. Augustine—grow or spread differently and usually create a subtler result.
Dry grass, clean alternating passes, and a consistent mowing direction help produce the clearest contrast.

Will a lawn striper damage my grass?
During normal mowing, a properly installed CheckMate™ gently bends established grass. Newly seeded areas should be given enough time to develop strong roots before striping.
Do I fill the roller with sand or water?
No. CheckMate™ uses solid-rubber rollers—essentially run-flat tires—so no filling is required.
Can I leave it attached to the mower?
Yes. It can remain installed during normal mowing and while trailering. Avoid reversing the striper into curbs or other solid obstacles.
Does a rear-discharge deck affect the stripes?
No. A rear chute does not affect the striper or the stripe pattern.
Will it work with a bagger or hitch?
Often, yes, but compatibility depends on the accessory’s mounting location. Some baggers use the same points required by the striper.
How do I know which lawn striper fits?
